President Bola Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the tragic explosion that rocked Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, on Tuesday night. The devastating incident claimed the lives of two individuals and left approximately 80 others injured, while causing extensive damage to buildings, vehicles, and properties.
A statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, conveyed President Tinubu’s concern about the blast, attributing its cause to the activities of illegal miners. The President condemned the “inexcusable and reckless behavior” that led to the explosion, urging swift action to identify and hold those responsible accountable.
President Tinubu extended heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Oyo State, calling on relevant government agencies to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident. Additionally, he directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to collaborate with the Oyo State Government in providing immediate and comprehensive relief to the victims.
In response to the tragedy, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, who visited the explosion site on Tuesday night, shared preliminary findings from security agencies. Governor Makinde revealed that the blast in Dejo Oyelese Street, Bodija, was caused by explosive devices stored by illegal miners.
While the investigations continue, Governor Makinde assured that anyone found culpable would be brought to justice. The explosion, with an initial estimated death toll of 10 persons and 15 hospitalized, affected key locations including the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Oyo State House of Assembly, and residences in various neighborhoods.
The affected areas include Ologuneru, Apete, New Garage, Bashorun, Akobo, Sango, and Eleyele. The gravity of the incident prompted Governor Makinde to declare a commitment to holding those responsible accountable and ensuring the safety of the community.
