A youth group within the main opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, known as PDP Youth Frontier, PDPYF, has called on leaders of the party to earnestly consider given Rt. Hon Mike Iheanatu the position of the National Secretary since Senator Samuel Anyanwu has been nominated as the governorship candidate of Imo State.
The group made this position known in a communique on Monday in Abuja, after a meeting of its National Working Committee.
The communique, signed by the group’s national coordinator and Secretary, Hon Maxwell Ibe, and Kelechi Okere said if the PDP is to make any headway in future election in Nigeria, it must “put its house in order” by appointing a credible man to take up Senator Sam Anyanwu position without further delay.
According to the group, it will be evil, improper on the part of the National Working Committee (NWC) to deliberately allow Senator Anyanwu to still preside as National Secretary while at the same time a governorship candidate of the PDP in the November 11 Imo election.
The group said the national headquarters of the party must in its overall interest act wisely by persuading Sen Sam Anyanwu to tender his resignation duelly before it will be used against him in the election. This idea of allowing officials of parties to contest election without resigning from office is worrisome, an abberation that must be stopped, as it only breed political monopoly. Allowing the umpire to preside over his own election is completely wrong and condemnable too.
“We want PDP to provide a level playing ground for proper rebuilding of the party to avoid what was experienced during the last election where PDP governors openly campaigned and worked against the party’s candidate Alh Abubakar Atiku”. “This is the height of insubordination, indiscipline, political rascality and cruelty by party men”
“We know Hon Mike Iheanatu is the right peg for the square hole. He is experienced, loyal and has the capacity to turn things around for the party. He is also from the same zone with Senator Sam Anyanwu.”
The PDP youth said that “in the past weeks, several consultations and shared ideas have pointed to the fact that for the PDP to regain power at the federal level in the future, a total overhaul of its entire system must occur. Ensure discipline and expel the members undergoing criminal investigation including NWC and BoT members”.
“We cannot continue with this pattern of leadership if we really love PDP and wants it to be the credible opposition that can win election in the future”
“We think the time for change has come and we will continue to pressure and protest if need be to NEC, NWC and BOT of PDP on the urgency of the matter before it plunge PDP into another crises they cannot survive” the group asserted.
