A United Kingdom Court in Old Barley has sentenced former Deputy Senate President of Nigeria Ike Ekweremadu to nine years eight months in prison for organ trafficking plot
The court also sentenced his wife Biatrice Ekweremadu to four years six months in jail. also,doctor who served as a middle man and also recruited the donor, Dr Obinna Obeta was sentenced to 10 years and his medical license suspended.
The Ekweremadus and Obeta were convicted in March, 2022 over accusations of trafficking a 21-year-old man to the UK from Lagos, to harvest his organ for his daughter Sonia who was in need of a Kidney transplant.
Despite all the pleas from the Nigerians , house of representatives ECOWAS and also the former president of Nigeria Olusegun Obasanjo for leniency, Ekweremadu got what is expected to be a fair sentencing.
They were also accused of conspiring to exploit the man for his kidney, in the first of such case under modern slavery laws.
