APC Condemns Suspension of Neni Traditional Ruler Over Chieftaincy Title

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly criticized the indefinite suspension imposed on the traditional ruler of Neni, Igwe Damian Onwuamaeze Ezeani, by Anambra State Governor, Prof Charles Soludo. The suspension came in response to Igwe Ezeani conferring a chieftaincy title on Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, a member of the APC representing Anambra South.

In a statement issued by the APC Zonal Publicity Secretary in Anambra Central, Igboeli Arinze Napoleon, the party decried the suspension as an attempt to interfere with traditional institutions and involve them in the political complexities of Anambra. Napoleon argued that utilizing the Anambra State Traditional Rulers’ Law to suspend Igwe Ezeani showed a lack of respect for revered traditional institutions, posing potential risks to the state’s peace and development.

The statement expressed the party’s discontent with the government’s interference in traditional matters, particularly with the suspension of the paramount ruler of Neni. Napoleon highlighted that such actions, grounded in Section 2 C of the Anambra State Traditional Rulers Law, seemed more like a witch-hunt against Igwe Ezeani for conferring a title on Senator Ubah.

The APC questioned the government’s consistency, asking if Igwe Ezeani was the first to confer a title on someone from outside his community without the need for clearance from the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Community Affairs. The statement implied that the government’s sudden action might be politically motivated, considering the timing of the suspension following the title conferred on Senator Ubah.

Furthermore, the APC criticized Section 2 C of the law, terming it as repugnant. The party emphasized that the administration should focus on more pressing issues such as unemployment, infrastructure challenges, and the overall security of lives and property in the state, rather than meddling in traditional affairs.

The controversy surrounding Igwe Ezeani’s suspension adds a new layer to the political landscape in Anambra, with the APC positioning itself against what it sees as unwarranted interference in traditional institutions.
